Box Hill Emergency Department has 42,000 patient attendances per year. Approximately 18% of these are paediatric patients. Our admission rate to the ward is over 30%.
Box Hill Emergency Department is fully accredited for 24 months of advanced training by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and is accredited for Paediatric log book training.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Training time (5 hours per week) is allocated to each registrar. All registrars (except the day shift registrar who is on the floor) are expected to participate in the organised Thursday afternoon sessions.
In Eastern Health we are fortunate to have the roles of Director of Emergency Medicine Education (Dr Jenny Brookes) and Assistant in Emergency Medicine Education (Dr Jo Dalgliesh) who are employed specifically for training. They provide examination training and emergency medicine education across the three EDs of Eastern Health so that candidates are advantaged by access to up to 3 tutorials per week, a variety of case-mix and involvement of multiple FACEMs including senior FACEM examiners. Specific programs exist for both primary and fellowship exams including trial examinations.
RESEARCH
Research is encouraged and an Eastern Health ED Research Committee was formed in 2005 to support registrars in meeting requirements for 4.10 projects. A comprehensive document: Emergency Medicine Research Guidelines has been produced by this committee and registrars embarking on their 4.10 should read this prior to undertaking any work.
